The existing two-lane Haisla Bridge over the Kitimat River is the only crossing over the Kitimat River and connects communities within the District of Kitimat. The existing bridge was constructed in 1954 and is operating at the end of its intended design life.
The Government of Canada has allocated $55 million in funding to the District to cover the capital cost for the construction of a new two-lane bridge adjacent to the existing bridge and for the decommissioning of the existing bridge. Approach roadway works, retaining walls, and embankments tie into the existing roadway. Traffic management during construction allowed access across the existing bridge and utilities were relocated to the new bridge. The new bridge achieved substantial completion in December 2023. It is approximately 230m long and includes new lighting, connection to existing trails (including new paths under the bridge), erosion protection works at the riverbanks and a new sidewalk.
